Description
What is considered a family, and who gets to define it? In 1964, despite the racial tension occurring in a post–WWII America, Catherine and Jonathan adopt a baby girl from Korea. This unconventional choice brings disapproval from Catherine’s family, which creates an even closer bond between her and her daughter. Narrated in alternating chapters by Catherine, her adopted daughter Min, and Min’s best friend Laura, Scissors, Paper, Stone spans twenty years of love, loss, and the complex reality of female relationships. By 1985 Catherine is living a risk-free life on her own accord, Laura is dating her way through college, and Min is a massage therapist who has come out as a lesbian and is learning to embrace her Korean heritage. After Min and Laura take a summer road trip together, the shifts in their friendship force all three women to examine the assumptions they’ve been living by and to make choices about the roles they want to play in each other’s lives.

This story felt incredibly real. Scissors Paper Stone follows the lives of three women over several decades. The times, tragedy, cultural stereotypes, and personal choices affect each of these women in different ways.My favorite character was Catherine, and my favorite relationship was the mother-daughter one between Catherine and Min. Their struggle to understand and respect one another was, for me, the crux of the story. Mother-daughter relationships can be aggressive and dynamic and hurtful, and the reality of that is on full display in Scissors Paper Stone. I appreciate the author's ability to paint such a realistic picture of the turbulant relationships mothers and daughters can have. The back and forth between Min and Laura was also well done. Understanding attraction is difficult enough without adding the confusion of being attracted to your best friend. I loved their story and I'm happy the way their roles in each other's lives "ended" in the final pages.I highly recommend Scissors Paper Stone if you're looking for a complex look at family dynamics from the perspective of three complicated women wrapped in cultural issues that are a product of their time yet still very relevant today.
